The C55 steam locomotive appeared in 1935 as the successor to the C51, and is characterized by its modernized appearance compared to previous steam locomotives, such as the shape of the dome and the addition of reinforcements called webs to the spokes of the driving wheels. The C55, belonging to the Asahikawa Locomotive Depot, was used to pull passenger trains on the entire Soya Main Line in its later years, but all of the cars were withdrawn from service around the fall of 1974.
